There was heaviness across her body, a suffocating warmth that Kaeja wished would go away.
Her mind temporarily thought that she was back home, in her bed, under too many blankets and the heat turned up too high. But it is far too natural, this warmth, that it could not have been manufactured. There’s the stirring forth of events from remote corners of her brains, as every last instant came back to her: Ophelia, for the first time, looking inhuman and corrupted. The glowing portal behind her classmate, edged with mysterious symbols that Kaeja would never understand. And though Minnie told her not to do anything foolish, not to put herself in danger, Kaeja had reached forward in an attempt to stop Ophelia, to take that stick out of her hand, and somehow she was instead pushed through the portal.
It was now Saule’s voice in her head, telling her that she was just human, nothing special, couldn’t do anything. Couldn’t stop anyone.
She reluctantly opened her eyes, in hopes that she would see the pale bedroom ceiling, that it had all been a dream. Instead it is a red and orange sky, depressingly clear, either sunrise or sunset. Kaeja’s hands hesitantly moved to feel what was underneath her—sand, coarse and dry, uncomfortable and real. Covered over her body was not a blanket, like she originally thought, but a jacket. The fabric was coarse and thick, and not comforting in the slightest. Kaeja could only think of the blankets on her bed back home, soft, smooth, light.

Everyone when they think of Ray Bradbury tends to think of Farenheit 451, or Something wicked this way comes, but my favourite of all his works, just for the brilliant deftness of it…has to be There Will Come Soft Rains
There Will Come Soft Rains
In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o’clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o’clock! as if it were afraid nobody would. The morning house lay empty. The clock ticked on, repeating and repeating its sounds into the emptiness. Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!
In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunnyside up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two cool glasses of milk.
“Today is August 4, 2026,” said a second voice from the kitchen ceiling., “in the city of Allendale, California.” It repeated the date three times for memory’s sake. “Today is Mr. Featherstone’s birthday. Today is the anniversary of Tilita’s marriage. Insurance is payable, as are the water, gas, and light bills.”
Somewhere in the walls, relays clicked, memory tapes glided under electric eyes.

Narook’s place was almost a third home. Not a first, because that was the streets. Nor the second, for that was the attic apartment at the Probending Arena.
But a comfortable third. A place that always smelled of noodles that brought forward and created imaginary memories, of an apartment…
